Solo River Cruising: What the Single Supplement Really Costs on Viking, Tauck, and AmaWaterways

The first time I priced a Viking river cruise for a solo client, I checked my math three times because the number looked wrong. It was not wrong. Solo pricing is just the one corner of river cruising where the internet cannot get its story straight. One site says the supplement is 50 percent, another says 75, another swears you pay double the fare. So which is it? None of them, exactly. Viking does not publish a fixed percentage. The supplement moves with the itinerary, the sailing date, the cabin category, and demand, and which line you pick makes a HUGE difference in what you actually pay. I book solo travelers on river cruises regularly, and the real quotes tell a consistent story. Most Viking quotes land between 50 and 100 percent of the second fare, Tauck is waiving the supplement entirely on its Category 1 cabins for 2026, and AmaWaterways runs solo offers on select sailings.

What a Single Supplement Actually Is

River cruise fares are priced per person based on two people sharing a cabin. Think of it like a hotel room. The room costs what it costs whether one person sleeps in it or two, so when you sail alone, the cruise line asks you to cover some of the fare that second guest would have paid. That is the whole concept. The question is how much of that second fare you are asked to cover, and this is where the lines part ways in a big way.

What Viking Really Charges Solo Travelers

Viking does not have dedicated solo cabins on its river ships, so a solo traveler books a standard double occupancy stateroom and pays the fare plus a supplement. In my experience quoting and booking these, the supplement usually lands around 85 percent of the second fare. Treat any single number you read online as a rough guide until you see an actual quote.

On a cruise priced at $4,000 per person, a supplement of 85 percent adds about $3,400, bringing your total to roughly $7,400 before air, upgrades, or gratuities. The same math on a premium veranda stateroom or an Explorer Suite adds up much faster, which is why I usually steer solo clients toward the standard and French balcony categories where the dollar amount of the supplement stays manageable.

Viking does run single supplement savings on select departures from time to time. These promotions come and go without much notice, they apply to specific sailings and cabin categories, and they are exactly the kind of thing a good agent (me!) watches for. When one drops on an itinerary my client wants, we move quickly, because those cabins are limited.

And can we talk about the upside for a minute? The whole cabin is yours. Both pillows are yours. The thermostat is set to exactly the temperature you like, nobody is watching the news at 11 pm, and nobody's suitcase is competing with yours for the closet. Plenty of my solo clients decide that alone is worth a real portion of the supplement.

Tauck Is the Solo Story of 2026

While everyone argues about Viking's percentages, Tauck quietly made the strongest solo offer on the rivers. For 2026, Tauck is waiving the single supplement on all Category 1 riverboat cabins across more than 250 European river cruise departures, so a solo traveler pays the same fare as each half of a couple. Tauck itself pegs the savings at up to 50 percent. The line is also cutting the supplement by $1,000 on certain other cabin categories on select departures.

Remember that Tauck is already the most inclusive line on the rivers. Every shore excursion, gratuities, drinks from specialty coffee to premium spirits, and transfers at the start and end of your journey are in the fare. I earned my Certified Tauck Specialist designation through daily classes and seminars onboard the MS Joy at Tauck Academy, and the thing that stayed with me is how completely Tauck removes decisions from your plate. For a solo traveler who does not want to negotiate a single logistics question alone in a foreign country, that matters even more than it does for a couple.

Category 1 cabins are the smallest on the ship and they sit on the lowest deck. On a river ship, that is a much smaller sacrifice than it sounds. You are off the ship most of the day, the scenery is the same from the lounge, and the money you save is real.

AmaWaterways Has Solo Deals Worth Knowing About

AmaWaterways runs solo offers on select sailings, and they can be generous. This year's offers included waived single supplements on select 2027 Europe sailings and supplements as low as 10 percent on others. These offers change, so ask me what is live when you are ready to book.

A 10 percent supplement changes the entire calculation. On that same $4,000 fare, you would pay about $400 extra instead of $3,400. If you are flexible on dates, AmaWaterways can be the best value on the river for a solo traveler. And group excursions are the easiest way to meet people when you are traveling alone.

What Solo River Cruising Is Actually Like

Worried you will be the third wheel at every dinner? You will not be, and I say that as someone who has stood in those lounges on embarkation night and watched strangers turn into dinner companions before the appetizers landed. A Viking Longship carries 190 guests, and Tauck riverboats carry 130 or fewer. Dining is open seating, so you sit with different people every night, and by the third evening you are waving at familiar faces across the lounge. Excursions are included group activities, which means you spend hours walking medieval towns and vineyard villages with the same curious, well traveled people. Nobody is dining alone unless they want to be.

The guests skew 55 and older, and they are the kind of people who read the daily program and actually show up for the lecture. Many are solo travelers themselves. If you are a woman traveling alone, river cruising is about as comfortable as travel gets! The ship is small, the crew knows your name by day two, and every excursion is guided and group based.

How to Keep the Cost Down

Book early, because lines allocate a limited number of cabins to solo pricing and the waived supplement inventory goes first. Choose an entry level cabin category, where the supplement is smallest in dollar terms. And work with an agent who watches these promotions daily, because solo deals are rarely advertised loudly and they change with little notice. Tauck's 2026 waiver rewards the people who hear about it early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Viking have solo cabins on river ships?

No. Viking's river ships have no dedicated solo staterooms, so solo travelers book a standard double occupancy cabin and pay a single supplement. The upside is a full sized cabin all to yourself.

How much is the single supplement on a Viking river cruise?

Viking does not publish a fixed percentage. In my booking experience it typically runs around 85 percent of the second fare. Viking occasionally offers single supplement savings on select departures.

Which river cruise line is best for solo travelers in 2026?

For value, Tauck, because the single supplement is waived on all Category 1 riverboat cabins across its 2026 European river departures. AmaWaterways is worth a look whenever it has a solo offer running. Viking remains a wonderful experience for solo travelers who love the ship and itinerary enough to absorb the supplement.

Is a river cruise safe for a solo female traveler?

Yes, and I would put it near the top of the list. Small ships, attentive crews, guided group excursions, and a well traveled guest community make river cruising one of the most comfortable ways for a woman to travel alone.

When should I book a solo river cruise?

As early as possible, at least 12 months out. Solo friendly cabins are limited on every line, and the waived supplement offers apply to specific inventory that sells first.

Will I feel out of place as the only solo traveler onboard?

You will NOT be the only one. The open seating dining and group excursions make connections happen naturally. Several of my solo clients have come home with new travel friends they now cruise with.

Let Me Run the Numbers for You

So, ready to see real numbers instead of internet guesses? The true cost of sailing solo depends on the sailing, the cabin, and whatever promotion is live the week you book, and I watch those offers all season. I have sailed and trained with Viking, Tauck, and AmaWaterways, so when I tell you which cabin is worth it, it is because I have stood in it. If you are not sure which river or which line fits you, I've got you covered. Book a call and I will pull actual quotes on the itineraries you are considering, side by side, so you can see exactly what solo travel costs before you commit.
